Lingual Braces

Aesthetically pleasing alternative to normal fixed braces

Fixed to the back of the teeth

Lingual braces are fixed braces which are fitted to the back of the teeth so that they are not visible to others. They are made specifically for each individual patient’s mouth to fix their particular problem.

They are an aesthetically pleasing alternative to normal fixed braces which are obvious and highly visible in the mouth. The brace delivers the results wanted but without any unattractive metal being on show.

How do Lingual Braces work?

Lingual braces work in the exact same way as normal metal braces: they apply ongoing pressure to teeth to move them into the desired location. Brackets have to be hand-made as the back of the teeth are different in shape for each individual.

How long does treatment take?

The lingual braces are fitted over two appointments. During the first appointment we take an impression of the teeth, which is then sent off to a laboratory for the bespoke brackets to be created. During the second visit cement is put on the back of the brackets and they are then put onto the back of the teeth. The arch wire is threaded through the brackets and this shifts the teeth over time.

Are there any disadvantages?

There may be some pain felt on the tongue initially as your mouth starts to adapt to the lingual braces. They may also impact speech and you may find that you have a slight lisp temporarily. Like any brace system the teeth will feel tender and sore to begin with, especially when eating. It is important to keep on top of oral hygiene as food can become caught in the braces and is often difficult to see.

Lingual braces are the most costly fixed appliance.

Who can benefit from Lingual Braces?

Lingual braces can benefit people with the following problems:

  • Incorrect bite function
  • Teeth gaps
  • Overcrowding
  • Crooked teeth

They are great for anyone who would like to straighten their teeth and enhance their smile without wearing aesthetically displeasing traditional metal brackets.

They are not suitable for people with smaller teeth or certain bite problems.
