What does the procedure involve?
The implant treatment process involves at least two appointments. The first session is where a small incision is made in the gums, the tissue is lifted and a small hole is drilled in the jawbone. The implant is fixed into the socket, the incision is closed and the treatment site is then left to integrate. The healing process takes time, but a temporary restoration may be fitted until the implant is ready for a permanent restoration to be attached. Once the implant has healed fully (this usually takes between 2 and 6 months) the crown, dental bridge or denture is attached and you can start enjoying your new smile. A CT scan may be required.
Are there any downsides?
Dental implants are not cheap and they may be considerably more expensive than dental bridges and dentures. However, the implants in the bone itself can last a lifetime if covered for and maintained properly there with the crown or bridge where on top will need to be replaced from time to time in the same way as those supported on natural tooth roots. Considering this, the initial fees paid represents a long-term investment and this may work out cheaper in the long-run.
